This book could be divided into two parts. The first half of the book involves the time measurement, in which the two lead characters participate in a contract requiring the tenant be at the sexual mercy of the lord for a certain amount of time at each meeting, starting with five seconds and doubling each time they meet again. This is an interesting concept, but I trudged through this part of the book, not finding it as engaging in reality as it looked in the blurb.

The second half of the book begins to get interesting as we get a glimpse of the future and wonder how these characters get to that place and predicament. I do think the author did well in creating suspense. I did not know how everything would be resolved and kept turning pages looking for answers.

The problem with the payoff, as it too often is in this genre, is that *spoiler alert (kinda)* the conflict ends up being one big misunderstanding. Oops, I overheard you incorrectly/misunderstood your motivations, so I acted irrationally, but that's ok, everything is forgiven now. I really hate that plot device. It does a disservice to the reader when you commit time to reading about two people's anguish that could have been avoided has they taken a moment to truly understand their situation.

Lastly, the criticism that drops this book from three stars down to two is that it is completely ludicrous. I'm okay with the suspension of disbelief -- anything from the supernatural to men who are too sensitive and romantic (and rich! and handsome!) to be believed. But I didn't believe for a second that these characters - a poor peasant and a wealthy lord, would make the decisions they do. I found everything implausible in a way that goes far beyond the temporary suspension of disbelief. In the end, it all seemed very contrived.

Lastly, and this is a *SPOILER* I had to put the book down when Maeve agreed to dress as the nanny to accompany her lover and for all intents and purposes her daughter in public. That was so degrading and not at all romantic. Yuck.

A Love by Any Measure Killian McRae 9780983979708 Books Reviews

My expectations with this book when i started reading it were so high. I actually liked the first few chapters a lot. But then somewhere around 40% i began losing interest.
What i liked
- story involving a Lord and an Irish peasant is something other than the most common plots with aristocracies on the lead.
- i liked the setting in Ireland instead of the usual London balls
- i wanted to see real love blossom between the young August and Maeve despite the odds

What turned me off among others
- August turned out to be really selfish and has no backbone. He hurt Maeve when they were young, and kept doing so when they matured. He can be so hard and authoritative one moment and then turn into a very insecure, pathetic man the next.
- His treatment of Maeve is disgusting. Getting her to accept a contract of her time for his sexual pleasures to pay off her rent, while all along what he really needed was to evict her, omitting the information of him having a wife and a child on the way.
- i did not like Maeve the moment she agreed to the contract, and especially when later on, she agreed to be his live in mistress guised as nanny, while Amelia, the wife, encourages them to share a bed chamber. Ughh! What a weird arrangement is that. And everyone is ok with it, his wife, sister and brother-in-law, all perfectly content as if in those times gossip didn't break and ruin a person of even the noblest of bloodlines.
- the misunderstanding due to Maeve's eavesdropping could have been a good twist to the story, but the author just blew it way out of proportion kidnapping, jail, fire burning a whole city, and the death of some, including a very good man guilty only of his undying devotion to a woman who couldn't return his affection. I thought Owen should have been afforded some kind of happy ending as well.
- the plot about the Irish rebels or brotherhood (whatever) and the extent of Jefferson's, Owen's, Patrick's and Rory's involvement and it's relevance to the story was not clear.
- i hated the constant jumping from the 1860's to the 1870's, back and forth it went. I swear i got lost and thought that Maeve escaped to the US aided by Owen two times, until i realised it was a flashback, again.
- book needed editing. The constant flashbacks and -forwards were confusing enough. Then August would suddenly call Maeve "May". Other example for editing is "check bones", etc.
- and i definitely cannot say i liked the ending. I still think that August and Maeve are two sick people, so perhaps they are a good fit for each other, just not my type of hero and heroine.

This is really one, if not the most sorry, disturbing and twisted stories i have read. I wonder about all the raving 5 star reviews and how the reviewers got such good impressions, because i just can't find anything really good in this. I felt that i wasted my time looking for that positive point, but i am totally disappointed. Two stars because i did enjoy the beginning.
