A hilarious parody of the detective genre, Klondike is the story of a private eye whose efforts to preserve his moral integrity turn out to be doomed as he finds himself playing a lethal, slightly wacky game in which ears are severed and puns are exchanged.

There are times when you come across a book that you read, and you think, "Wow, why hasn't anyone done this before?"

Phil Jourdan's Klondike is one of those books. In a genre that has millions upon millions of titles, Jourdan purposely incorporates all of the clichés of a detective novel, and makes them uniquely his own. It's a fantastic read, and it made me laugh quite a few times. I'd recommend it for anyone who likes detective novels and doesn't mind laughing.

So that's a lot of people.

This novel kicks ass. A lot happens and it happens fast in this short book, which despite its pace feels complete in the end. As the plot and characters move forward into the absurd, grotesque, and maniacal, so does the prose follow suit to evolve from a comical voice to one more dark and sinister; a colourful cast of characters start off punning, jestering, and playing coy; its all fun and games until somebody loses an ear, and that's when hearts and bones are broken. The unfortunate private detective Abe Schmidt is knocked around like a pinball through a labyrinth of twisted minds, and when he begins to wonder if he's the only sane one left in the world, he's faced with having to play the game of ears himself. A punning villain, a dominatrix villainess, a pot smoking henchman, a philosophic go-to-guy, and a horrific game that rises from the mockery of a genre; there's a lot on every page and yet its over before you know it.
First off Detective novels are not my genre. In fact, when I found out that's what it was I went into it fully expecting not to like it.

And then my mind changed.

It's the fact that it's a parody of the genre that did it for me, but "Klondike" doesn't get totally caught up in the satire of it. It could've been a slippery slope to just let this thing slide into a full-on slapstick mode, but there's a compelling story here--especially when the actual game of Klondike is introduced midway through almost like a brutal game of chess where ears are sacrificed instead of pawns. That's what really sold it for me...I was given something I wasn't meant to take seriously but I did anyway...hard to do.

So "Klondike" has my endorsement.

It's quick, clever, and fun...a different take on this genre.
