Author Toby Neal paints such a lush and gorgeous picture of Hilo, Hawaii, that I wanted to board the first plane that would take me there. From its beaches to its christmas berry bushes to its fern forests to its "vog" (volcanic emissions from Kilauea), I just couldn't get enough. Hilo and its surroundings are perfect for a mystery series.

I also enjoyed the character of Dr. Wilson, the police therapist. In many ways the scenes between Wilson and Lei were the best in the book and showed Lei's true path to healing from her traumatic past.

There's a lot to like in Blood Orchids. In fact, that's the main problem: there's too much. There are murders, kidnaps, rapes, a stalker, people popping up from Lei's past, shootings, meltdowns, therapy sessions, a romance-- enough action for two books-- and I felt the story would've flowed much better if a few of these elements had been left out.

I also had doubts about Lei's effectiveness as a police officer. This character has emotional meltdowns that cause her to black out. Not a good thing when someone is supposed to be protecting and serving. At least by book's end Lei seemed to be on the brink of putting her past behind her.

I may have had my doubts about parts of Blood Orchids, but the book does have good bones. I'm certainly curious about Lei's next investigation, and who could turn down another trip to Hilo?

Blood Orchids Lei Crime Book 1 edition by Toby Neal Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I am in LOVE with this book; I could not put it down! This book was a real page-turner, I wanted to read it in one sitting. Lei is a cop with some ghosts from her past that keep revisiting her. Her past definitely affects her, but it also has made her who she is. Some romance, but a lot more action than romance. The romance between her and Michael is cute; not totally unpredictable, but I liked the addition. A touch of romance kind of takes the dark nature of the book out just a little bit.

The ending shocked me completely! I could not believe who the killer was. Such a good ending and I love that it was so unpredictable. I was thinking it was someone else for a while, but when all the pieces came together it was a shock. I never would have guessed it. The ending came together well; it made sense, it tied up loose ends, it was surprising.

I have never been to Hawaii so I cannot speak to how accurate it is, however I had a friend who lived there for a few years and she said it was pretty accurate to Hawaii. To me it wouldn't have mattered, but I get that some people know the area and it is nice to have a book in an area where it is accurate and representing of the actual place. The descriptions sounded beautiful. The book also uses Hawaiian dialect; it was kind of hard to understand some of it because I'm not Hawaiian, never been there, but I thought it was an authentic touch.

The author really weaves a good story. There is action, suspense, romance, twists, but everything holds together and builds upon each other. This author has a gift for writing. I got this book for free and I am hooked; I normally don't like paying for ebooks but I'm making an exception for this series. I have to know what else happens; Lei is a tough girl with that sensitive side and she makes a darn good cop.

I don't remember there being a lot of curse words in this book. To me, that is another sign of a good author. When an author can't think of another word to use but a curse word, I lose interest immediately. There is a love scene, but it isn't really detailed.
A detective story with a twist, with several twists - Blood Orchids gripped me from the first page. Set in Hilo Hawaii, Lei Texeira is a young policewoman whose dark past is about to land slap bang in her present and cause a whole heap of trouble. A double murder leads to Lei being included as part of the investigation. Unfortunately, after receiving several odd notes it seems she too is a target. However, it is unclear whether her stalker and the murderer are one and the same and this is when her past returns to haunt her.

So - we have at least one stalker, a murderer, a traumatic childhood and a blossoming romance; toss in an awesome dog, Lei's partner, a jealous colleague, an odd neighbour and a brilliant police therapist and you have a story that doesn't let you pause for breath. I love a good murder mystery and was pretty sure I knew who the perpetrator was, only to have that thrown right out of the window. While the story is complex - with several twists and turns and some quite unexpected red-herrings - it's not a difficult read.

Neal blends the horror and uncertainty of the investigation with the wonder and rich culture of Hawaii, producing a novel which tugs at all the emotions - for me the perfect combination. I simply couldn't put it down!
It's not easy to write a story that takes place in Hawaii for a wider audience and do it well. Many authors write from an outsider's perspective, throwing out careless mistakes which cause local readers to groan in the same way they suffer the mispronunciation of famous street names or landmarks on Hawaii Five-O. Other writers spend so much time explaining why Hawaii is the way it is, they lose the rhythm of the narrative and distract from the story they are trying to tell. Another common trap is to use local expressions without bothering to explain what they mean.

The late Ian MacMillan could strike the right balance, and Toby Neal can, too. The main character in Blood Orchids--Lei Texeira--grew up partly in Hawaii, partly in California. Having Lei for a main character is like having a cultural interpreter to show you what it's really like to live in Hilo, on the island of Hawaii. The authenticity is there, the local flavor and texture are there, too. But the contemporary social issues are in the background. This story is about a very human and likeable cop with more than a couple of things to prove. Her friends, family, enemies, and the things that happen to her and around her make this a compelling read.
