The Undiscovered Island Portuguese in the Americas Series Darrell Kastin Books

Darrell Kastin has created a mysterious and compelling novel with unsuspected depths in The Undiscovered Island based on his own experience and that of his family. It is a tale of a search in the tradition of Portuguese exploration, looking for what may have been, what is, and what may be, driven by a woman's search for her missing father. Warning: The Undiscovered Island may leave you with a feeling of discontent with your staid life and a desire to sail beyond the sunset.

The Undiscovered Island Portuguese in the Americas Series Darrell Kastin Books Reviews

This work of brilliance is much more than a novel. On the surface, it's partly a love story of an American-born woman who goes in search of her missing father and finds instead, love, and her Portuguese ancestral roots on the Atlantic islands of the Azores. Meanwhile it's really a love story to Portuguese heritage and Portuguese history.

The book is multi-faceted in its structure. Interspersed among the pages is a mini-history of the formation of the Portuguese nation, Portugal's exploration of much of the world, and the settlement of the Azores. The author quotes extensively from The Lusíads (Oxford World's Classics), the Portuguese epic; Portuguese poets, especially the great Fernando Pessoa, and from many historians who wrote about Portugal, Portuguese exploration, and the Azores. There are many passages that, together, constitute a mini-genealogy of noble Portuguese founding families, intertwined with the history of Portugal. Also interspersed are philosophical writings, ostensibly those written by the missing father, a kind of crazy hermit obsessed with his native islands, his ethnic heritage, and his lineage in déclassé family.

The book slows down a bit in the last third when it shift into magical realism as the author takes us on a long fantastic voyage, in search of the Undiscovered Island, although this sequence is also one of the most entrancing dream-like passages I can think of in literature. The search for such an island (aka the Unknown Island, the Undiscovered Island, the Enchanted Island) is a recurring theme in Portuguese literature as in Saramajo's The Tale of the Unknown Island. I mention magical realism because I also happen to be reading The Movies of My Life A Novel by Chilean author Alberto Fuguet who is a proponent of McOndo, a movement proclaiming the end of magical realism which has become stereotypical of much Latin writing. All in all, The Undiscovered Island is a great read and I highly recommend it.
At first I was entranced by the narrative but all the flipping around between dialogue and poetry and stories soon gave me a headache. I can understand why some would find charm in this story. I thought it was bizarre. The final chapters made me feel like I was tripping on LSD. Not my cup of tea.
First off
I couldn't agree more with David Silva's review/words, I feel that same way... Roots?
I have been trying to get my hands on anything about Faial.
After a lifetime of saying I was 1/2 Portuguese I never knew where my roots were from.
I went clueless to Portugal in 2007 but was lost in a magical country with out any idea! We drove to towns that had family names imagining I would stumble across some answers.
My Grandfather migrated in 1909 , I never had the chance to learn where he was born. He passed away when I was 16. He did however put a paint brush, hammer, saw and screwdrivers in my hand every time I stayed with him.
I just found out this last December when I found his immigration card that was in my mothers pictures. After that I've been on a mission... I found a lot of ancestry in the last weeks.

I could hardly put the book down.

Buy a copy, read it and fall in love with it!!!

Hoping for a small amount of personal connection to a novel about the Azores, I was quickly swept off my feet by this exciting and reality shifting story of heritage, community and love. I usually read for an hour each night before bed, but this book with its lively, realistic and mysterious characters kept me too engaged to sleep. Kastin never reveals every piece of his puzzle and never underestimates both the intelligence of the reader and our willingness to go just beyond "normal" beliefs. I really grew to care about these people and flipped the pages in anticipation of what was coming next. I hope this story will continue. I can't thank you enough Mr. Kastin for helping create a mental profile of the culture and people that are a part of me lost over generations. You've helped me rediscover my Azorean roots. Excellent! I am waiting for Kastin's next book.
Kastin's writing displays not only his virtuosity in the written world, but also a deep concern of Portuguese culture. The author inserts poetry, legends and historical events in the novel, and shows a thorough knowledge and accurate research of Portuguese culture and literary tradition. Lyrical and profound, The Undiscovered Island is a story magnificently told. The characters get into an adventure of family quest where past, present and future blend into a metaphysical journey of self discovery. What begins to be the search for a disappeared father ultimately becomes the reunion with a greater and more fundamental whole - roots, the encounter with oneself, the disclosure of family past and country's destiny. Portuguese history, literature, tradition and mythology are present in the novel as the spiritual sceneries of the plot. The author often employs supernatural elements, fantastical descriptions and at times the narrative is enriched with sensible and profound remarks on life, love, hope and dreams. The story takes place in the 'enchanted' isles of the Azores archipelago, one of the most beautiful and well-preserved places on Earth. This book is so worth reading, that I recommend it should be read slowly and savoured.
