First things first: B. T. Gottfred can write--that is to say, he has a knack for crafting prose that almost snaps its fingers at the reader. This YA novel, Gottfred's second, focuses laser-like on on the pair of title characters while relegating their families and friends to lesser light, all to curious impact. Yes, even someone like me who can still suspend his disbelief can predict early on what will eventually happen; but what makes this work compelling is the twisted, torturous path the author refuses to straighten or smooth for Benedict and Penelope. If I more keenly appreciated the YA genre as a whole, I would likely give "The Nerdy and the Dirty" a fifth star. Someday, perhaps.

This was the first B.T. Gottfred book I've ever read and I'm not sure what I was expecting with a book titled "The Nerdy and the Dirty" but I think I got exactly what the title promised. Haha This was definitely the most unique, amusing, honest and real story that I've read in a long time. And, for honesty's sake, I'll admit that after reading the first couple chapters, I did not like any of the characters and was worried that I would end up disliking the entire book. Don't worry, I was wrong. ;)

All the characters were unique in their own way, but the two main characters, Pen and Benedict, who narrate the story in alternating point-of-views are definitely the most interesting. Pen is a self-proclaimed, and secret nymphomaniac and has been living her entire life as a "fake", as she calls it. She is constantly hiding and withholding all her honest thoughts and opinions for fear of no longer fitting in among her group of friends who are the in the "popular" crowd. Whereas Benedict, who is seen as a "nerd" and only has one person he can truly call a friend, lacks social skills. He is very blunt - and often times callous - in all his social exchanges, judgemental, and pompous. Unlike Pen, Benedict is incapable of being dishonest (even if lying would be the polite thing to do).

When I was first introduced to these two characters, my initial thought was, "How could a romance possibly develop between these two very different individuals?" They were practically total opposites! But as the plot progressed and I started to learn more about Pen and Benedict (just as they started to learn more about each other, too), I realized that their personalities and quirks complemented one another really well. I really enjoyed seeing both characters grow and develop throughout the story, and seeing one character change and strengthen the other. Oh, and I really loved how the changes in both characters were represented in the subtle changes to their names at the beginning of each chapter. Very clever.

If you're looking for a quirky, awkward, unique and unexpected romance between two people who are just as eccentric, you'll definitely find that in this book. I was not expecting to like "The Nerdy and the Dirty" as much as I did, nor was I expecting to laugh as often as I ended up doing. This book is definitely worth checking out! (Be warned, however, that this YA is more mature than most contemporary young adult books and contains some pretty... detailed scenarios.)

You know what I really like about BT Gottfred’s writing? He can actually portray a REAL teenager’s mind and actions and reactions. It’s refreshing. Because most teens written in YA act unrealistically mature, especially the boys.

This is a quick and dirty, coming of age read with uncomfortable but very real topics that I feel often get washed over in YA.

I absolutely love how explicit The Nerdy and the Dirty is. So you’ll need to be ready for such topics and content before giving this one a go.

That being said, I still think many, many teens are most definitely ready for a read with this caliber of explication of sex and adolescence. At least in my experience, recalling my junior high and high school years, sex is the main topic, dirty minds are abundant, and sex and self pleasure/exploration are definitely happening and sex drives are through the roof.

What I’m getting at is that this is real.

And if your aren’t a prude than this type of thought process, these types of actions and feelings about sex are the norm. Just not dinner conversation.

Which brings me to the only part that did make me uncomfortable (and I am far from a prude); and that is masturbation. If I could guess at how many times that word and all it’s variations were used in this book, I would say maybe 100 times.

There’s a lot of it with the main character and it’s uncomfortable. I wasn’t prepared for that level of honesty. I felt embarrassed. But then I almost felt relieved that I wasn’t the only person to go through all that confusion and guilt...

The Nerdy and the Dirty is so much more than just sex. Despite all the awkward masturbation, I felt connected to the characters and the underlying messages were very positive and I couldn’t put it down. I read it in one day.

The Nerdy and the Dirty is a superb 2nd novel for Gottfred who perfectly captures the range of emotions involved in teenage love. His characters are unique but relatable for anyone who has struggled through a high school relationship. Can't wait for his next book!
